The Makapu’u Lighthouse is an iconic landmark of the island of Oahu, Hawaii.

The Makapu’u Lighthouse was originally constructed in 1908 to guide ships through the Diamond Head Pass and the Molokai channel.

The lighthouse was last operational in 1968 and is now a popular hiking destination for locals and visitors alike. It is situated on the cliffs of Makapu’u Point, at an elevation of 565 feet (172 m). The entire hike is about 6 miles. The hardest part is going up a steep hill at the entrance of the hike. When you reach the top of the hill, you’ll be treated to a spectacular view of Kokohead crater and the eastern shoreline of Oahu. You’ll also see an amazing view of the Molokai channel and out in the far distance, are the islands of Molokai, Maui and Lanai.

Molokai channel is also the migration path for the Humpback whales. These whales travel thousands of miles from Alaskan shores to bask and in the warm, blue waters of Hawaii. If you look carefully during your hike, you might find some of these whales breaching the surface, or if you are lucky, bear witness to these whales during aerials.  Seeing whales is certainly a sight to behold and would be well worth the hike just by itself. So make sure you have your camera ready just in case.
