Pearl Harbor is a lagoon harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, west of Honolulu. Much of the harbor and surrounding land is a U.S. Navy deep water naval base. It is also the headquarters of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and was when it was attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. Pearl Harbor visitor center and the USS Arizona Memorial is truly an experience that you wouldn’t want to miss. This historic site is the #1 destination in Hawaii. It is the place that brought the United States into World War II. Not only is the USS Arizona Memorial wheelchair and mobility scooter accessible, but people and their families are given priority as each group is escorted by the U.S. Navy out to the memorial via ferry. Pearl Harbor is mobility scooter and power wheelchair accessible. Ramps are available the entire way and it is extremely easy to navigate.
The USS Arizona memorial is free of charge but you will need to obtain tickets as each ferry capacity is limited and ferries are loaded each 15 minutes. An approximate 15 – 20 minute movie presentation begins your trip to the Arizona Memorial which is the grave of over 1,102 sailors and Marines killed on the ship which lies below. For security reasons, you cannot carry any purses, backpacks or bags into the visitor center because they are prohibited, however; you can rent a storage locker for $3.00 if you choose. There are restrooms, snack areas as well as a gift shops and free museums on the premises. You can also buy tickets to tour the USS Bowfin submarine which is not wheelchair or mobility scooter accessible, nor is the Battleship USS Missouri. If you can walk short distances and climb a few stairs, both these vessels are accessible.
